I use a combination of things, Engine degreasers, Auto Glym caravan/motorhome cleaner, aluminium cleaner, WD40, Along with hot water and kitchen sponges with the green scotch type abrasive side, small hard bristle brushes and rubber conditioner when finishing up in places.
A lift is definitely much easier but I can work with just axle stands at there highest point and use 6 for safety along with the trolley jacks.
I would use a lift on a car that has never been detailed underneath before so I could use a steam cleaner and power wash to get at the suspension and in ground dirt.

This is how I do mine and there's plenty of room. To date its been done in the garage. I'm hoping to extend a new hard standing area outside the garage this year so will be able to get some of the more stubborn areas with the power washer.

Depending on the persons size, using stands and jacks is fine, it is certainly more strenuous though. I have access to a big lift also, but really thinking of buying a small one for my garage.
Depending on where you live and the conditions someone drives there car in, there really isnt any need to do much after that; however if mine was a daily driver or I lived near the seaside, I would use a clear hammerite waxoil.
For me its just a good clean after every drive and detail every year, usually finishing with WD40 and rubber conditioner.
I guess suspension is similar, I like to get the wheels off and give the suspension a good wash/steam clean, its tricky doing anything on suspension due to the movement and the fact the wheel are kicking so much up around that area all the time, so really a good wash is all I do, I keep the outer casing clean with the same products above. There are rustproof products out there that can be brushed/sprayed on but from most people I have talked to in the bodyshop business and detailers its not worth using.
I'll be doing a big detail on mine shortly, under the bonnet/engine bay, then underneath front and rear and will do a write up on it.
Started the clean up today and began with under the bonnet.

I removed the blower and top relay box first as I want to do this in stages.
So first the initial soak down, and right away you can see the difference
After the first soak down I then used some cloths and soft brushes, with warm water to get the first clean down.

This is just the first steps, which is the most time consuming as allot work goes into removing the grime, removing fuse boxes and plugs, blower etc out of the way and being very careful around the evaporator and fins. I just use a foam cleaner of the fins and wash it down with warm water spray then apply a disinfectant
