    Default Gauge Cluster Service 202412


    The owner wanted to carry out preventative service as he felt the speedo was showing huge offset at high speed range but apart from that, no issues.

    On receiving the unit, placed it on the simulator after disabling the odometer and immediately, noticed strange movement at the lower speed range.

    The needle showed some sort of oscillation.

    Similar to what I saw with the last one that I serviced but on that occasion, the Toshiba IC was dead.
    It didn’t register any speed above 20 - 30mph and the needle just dropped to 0.

    Fortunately, this one is still working and to my surprise, the offset at the higher speed range was nothing more than the usual figure that I would see on all other units.

    Took lots and lots of photo to show them to the owner but forgot to hide the odometer so won’t be posting on here.







    Also, when tested the [BRAKE LAMP] warning indicator, unlike other European spec units, this one didn’t trigger the [Parking brake] indicator so something not quite right.

    All other warning indicators were operating fine so the HIC seemed to be fine but will take a look.







    Once opened the unit, found severe leakage near the IC.

    Strange subsance at the top of this cap.

    Almost like boiled.

    Hope I can clean the area thoroughly after removing the caps.






    As seen on many units, the sleeve of this big capacitor is almost peeling off with the excessive heat.









    Interestingly, not too bad at the tacho circuit board especially around the HIC.

    Need to check thoroughly on why the parking brake indicator was not triggered when the [BRAKE LAMP] warning was set.

    Not JDM.

    Earlier last week, the owner collected his NSX and I’m now servicing another one from this week.

    So, wanted to finish this gauge cluster service while dealing with so many things back in Japan and other part of the world.



    Glad to report that there is no more rapid oscillation/vibration at the speedo needle that can be seen in the video in above #1 post.

    Had to clean extra areas around the driver IC.





    The [BRAKE LAMP] warning now operates together with the [Parking Brake] indicator specific to the European spec gauge cluster except for the German one.





    Before getting there, gave good washing up of the housing.





    Volt meter re-calibrated.

    There are few know-hows here as just setting at the source voltage won't be correct once installed back on the car.




    Cleaned both the odo and trip meters.

    For the reset mechanism of the tripmeter, treated it to minimise the friction.





    Checked the accuracy of the trip meter using 100mph simulator signal for 5min.

    As seen on all mph models, it was close enough.

    KPH ones are spot on.








    As always, European spec mph speedo requires extra hour for the calibration.

    As Heineken mentioned, quite normal to see one of the calibration pot to max out.

    This one was one of them.

    It maxed out so calibrated the low speed region as accurate as possible.

    Because these classic analogue gauges rely on the 90deg offset cross coil with the tangent of vector force and the weight of needle body itself,
    the reading would be always different depending on from which way it approached.

    New EPT sealer to reduce the chance of the dust to get behind the clear lens.





    All illumination light bulbs replaced with the new ones.

    The existing ones were quite burnt out and all black.







    Bulb and illumination check.





    As mentioned in another post, I’ve started paying extra attention to the oil pressure gauge after seeing slightly higher reading on my NSX since last year.

    I believe Honda changed the divider resistor at the back of the gauge over the years.

    Don’t know the actual resistance figure.

    After looking at enough 95+ gauge clusters, I can say all of them showed higher reading after replacing the capacitors.

    Some of the capacitance figures are different on 95+ models compared to the 91 - 94 ones and even extra capacitor on the AT model.

    Therefore, can’t say whether this higher reading would be the same on the 91 - 94 spec.





    Ready to be returned to the owner.

    Now in parallel with servicing another NSX, refurbishing 3 x Bose AMP for one owner and also all sorts of NSX electronics components for another garage.

    And although I'm in UK, pretty much living in different time zone for quite some time now....

    So haven't looked into the Forum platform software yet.
