I was there at 8 and also turned away - the issue is that there are too many turning up early and the traffic system can't cope - put simply the event is too popular for it's own good. I spoke to GRRC about this - they arn't interested, so long as lots of people turn up and buy their over priced "organic" breakfasts they don't see the problem. For those that do go however I agree it is a great place to get up close and personal to a lot of nice shiney metal.
