Drive Shaft 04

Planting the tiny pin bearings.

Each roller holds 10’s of these and there are 12 rollers in total so by the time I’m done with 100’s of pin bearings, my eyes and shoulders are always tired.

Initially, I noticed break down of grease especially at the right drive shaft but none of the rollers showed any signs of damages at the internal wall where the pin bearings sit.

Cleaned each joints to this level. Right side outboard and inboard joints seemed to have reached high temperature due to break down of the grease but not enough to cause mechanical damage.

From time to time, I read on NSX Prime that the owners were doing quick DIY job trying to just replace the old grease without removing the entire drive shaft out of the car.

I don’t recommend this method as you won’t be able to inspect the joint and the rollers properly.

Drive shaft is one of the weakest point on our NSX and this becomes even more critical if you have changed your suspension geometry and tyres such as lowering the rideheight, use of semi slick tyres, wider tyres, wider wheels or the use of spacers and changes in offset.

The right inboard joint will be significantly affected if you have aftermarket headers due to the heat exposure.

The sticky, smelly fresh grease…..
Once packed, check the movement of the rollers by moving the shaft many times to simulate the movement of the suspension.

So, after long hours, these tired looking old drive shafts …..

….. were refurbished to this fresh looking ones.

I still need to install these drive shafts, fill the MTF, torque the suspension bolts and nuts under 1G, EPS rack inspection, clean the A/C blower motor fan, clean the A/C cabin temperature sensor, reset the ECU, test driving session and then finally wash the car (looks like in the rain, again….).

Aiming to return this NSX Monday late afternoon depending on the progress on Sunday but instead of providing uncertain schedule, probably best to say collection on Tuesday to avoid sudden changes with short notice.
