Not much to report while cleaning all these dirty road grime on the brake calliper body and once again, being late for updating the blog so doing another catch up.
After carrying out minor adjustment (for now), closed the engine with new head cover gasket kits. Before doing so, cleaned the mating surface as much as possible to get good adhesion of the the liquid gasket. By the way, it was not fun removing all these old liquid gasket while keeping the engine inside the bay.... My back..... These should have been removed by the previous services......
I prefer leaving the liquid gasket overnight before cranking the engine so kept working on the brake area.
One of the reason why the brake was not performing well.
The FR inner pad was seized inside the bracket. You will feel rock solid pedal feeling but the pad won’t be touching the disc surface evenly.
Couldn’t take good photo and it’s not uncommon to see the pad not touching the inner and outer edge of the disc but what I wanted to show was the uneven wear between the left (upper side when on the car) and the right side (lower side on the car of the pad in this photo.
Later, when I disassembled the calliper, I noticed that all six pistons had build up of surface rust.
They came off fairly easily so glad the damage was prevented by acting now.
However, the larger 40mm pistons at both the FR and FL callipers were really difficult to push back into the calliper body.
I had to use the calliper tool to move them so that tells how bad the condition was.
With new calliper or freshly overhauled one, you can move the piston with just your finger.
Before hand cranking the engine, I remembered that the owner wanted me to check the state of the crank pulley bolt.
While it loosened without huge torque, the feeling was not right.
There was some sort of thread lock left in there and no need to use such thing.
Also, the bolt was not treated properly so glad the owner asked me to check it as it will cause headache next time when someone tries to loosen it.
Treated the bolt properly and tightened it to the spec.
Hand cranking followed by burst of starter cranking with INJ/IG disabled and then normal fire up.
Still, the engine just runs so smoothly.
Must finish the brake OH fairly soon but since it’s a safety device, not going to rush anything.
