  1. Speaker - Repair

    Introduction
Failure of the NSX active speakers is a common fault, especially for the early build years. The modules are class-D switching amplifiers with a MOS-FET driver bridge for low impedance (2 Ω) speakers. The amplifier can be divided into these main sections:

    • Output drivers (MOS-FET transistors) and Filter (coils)
One pair of transistors connects one pin of the speaker to either GND or VBAT. The IC U2 ensures that two opposing transistors are never conducting

  2. Airbag (SRS) - Capacitor Replacement

    Introduction
The Supplementary Restrain System (SRS) ECU suffers from ageing capacitors the same way as many other ECUs in the NSX. Two things makes it a special issue: The SRS is a safety device and a permanently lit warning light means failing the regular vehicle checks in most countries.
Especially the first generation ECUs (cars with only a driver's Airbag) tend to fail by shorting an important MOS-FET inside the housing which complicates repairs.

  3. Speaker - Capacitor Replacement

    Introduction
Each of the NSX's active speakers contain an amplifier module. Similar to most of the Electronic Control Units (ECUs) in the car, the capacitors in these modules tend to fail by leaking electrolyte. Especially the first generation of amplifiers (they can be identified by at least one small green capacitors) are known to leak early (sometimes after less then ten years) and resulting in most NSX having their amplifiers replaced at least once.
Modules with heavy leakage may ...

  4. Speaker

    Introduction
A number of sports cars from the 80s and 90s, were equipped with a BOSE audio system. A popular example, beside the NSX is the Corvette. These systems were specifically tuned to the vehicle to create the typical BOSE sound. Similar amplifiers are used in the Corvette C4.

    Details
Three specifically tuned amplifiers make up the system. Each one build into the speaker enclosures in the left door, right door and the passenger foot well. Door amplifiers are having ...

  5. Airbag (SRS)

    Introduction
Since its launch, the NSX was equipped with a driver's airbag. As of 1993 a passenger airbag and seat belt tensioners were added. The system is of rather simple design with the ECU containing an acceleration sensor that works together with two dash sensors and fires the airbag and seat tensioners upon front impact.
