Thread: Oil pressure gauge drops when in VTEC?

  1. Default Oil pressure gauge drops when in VTEC?

Noticed the other day that the oil pressure gauge is dropping to virtually nil when running in the VTEC zone. Given that I had used VTEC a few times earlier in the trip I assumed that had to be a red herring because obviously the engine would have siezed PDQ if the reading was correct. Strange anomloy? Do they all do that? Should I be worried? Car is running like a dream otherwise.

The oil pressure dropped barely perceptably (on the meter) when in VTEC for mine - I was watching while someone else was giving it the beans, so I'm pretty sure of this. It's never fallen to zero though..

so, maybe worth having someone look at it... If the oil pressure is zero for a few seconds, I don't think the engine would seize immediately (I read a bike magazine article where they emptied the oil from a ZX9R engine and then taped the throttle wide-open for 10 minutes  - no seizure!) - hope it's just a guage/sensor fault, though.

    Default oil pressure

My gauge dropped to zero sitting in traffic once. The dealer re-assured me its known fault with the sensor usually when hot. Its been good ever since even when very hot. ? dicky gauge I think?

Cheers for that Darren, that pretty much allays my fears. I've spoken to Brian @ Norton Way and my conclusion is that it must be a duff reading - there is no way the engine would continue at 0PSI at 7.5k rpm. Strange problem, but if it is not causing any issues (touch wood, seems to be OK) then I'm not going to worry excessively about it.

My oil pressure looks OK, as the revs rise so does the pressure, boot it; the pressure drops off after Vtec and is towards zero at red line. I saw the comments on Prime and decided that it was the sender or the gauge and not mechanical.
Like the man jumping off the Empire State building; "so far so good". 8000 mixed miles, though none constantly in Vtec range, all is OK.

I think it was at Donington Park where the oil pressure suddenly dropped down. I'm pretty sure it was down to a faulty sensor.
