Thread: Tyre Sizes

  1. Default Tyre Sizes

    Hi,

I know there is a tyre section but it's a long thread and need a quick repsonse if possible.

My front tyres are 215/45/16 and there isn't much choice.

However if i look up 215/40/16 there are loads to choose from and around half the price.

Can i run 215/40/16 up front instead of the 215/45/16?

Suely the ride wouldnt change that much from a 45 to a 40 profile?

There other alternative is a wider profile tyre, 225/45/16 there is still loads of choice bit more pricey than the 215/40/16 but still lots cheaper than the original 215/45/16.

I'm guessing the orig size is a rare/odd size setup hence why there isn't much choice and loads more than tyres with subtle change i.e. slightly wider or lower profile.

    Thanks.

There will be no problems with 215 40 16 as some owners have done this since availability is now scarce for oem size. There should be no rubbing when on full lock and TCS should not light up as below 5% tolerance, but speedo would read slightly higher then normal.

The speedo is driven off the gearbox so can't see how the front tyre sizes will affect it.

Actually 225/45/16 (+1.5%) is closer to the original rolling radius than 215/40/16 (-3.6%)

The Hankook RS-2 is said to be a good choice.

225 front tyres would reduce the propensity to understeer in-extremis, which depending on your driving style may or may not be desirable.

Don't think there'd be any issue with the 10mm wider tyre in terms of arch-clearance or liner-scrub - not enough extra width. Might actually fill the front arches out a little better too.

Blue '08 FD2 CTR - big, ITR-sized shoes to fill...
Yellow '96 NSX 3.0 - oh was it worth the wait!
Black '99 ITR - well, I had to have another one, the first was so much fun. Miss this one even more than #1...
Blue '03 S2000 - SOLD, flawed but fun
Blue '04 Focus TDCi Sport - SOLD, very good fun for a diesel!
Black '00 ITR - SOLD, still missed
Red '98 Civic VTi - SOLD, probably still bombproof

Sudesh, do you mean BS RE040 ? F1 confusion with tyre maker change?

    Hi,

No I just giving Jaffaz32 the other options available in the original size. But yeah the BS RE040 are mentioned in the link.

The Pirelli's I put on my car this year are P7's.
