Does anybody have detailed instructions ( workshop manual extract or technical service bulletin ) regarding the hole driling required to fit a new design water pump into the old shell?

once you have your new pump in place, just offer up your cover in the correct position and the drain pipe will touch the cover in the place where you need to make a hole for it to go through - if you slap a blob of grease or something onto the pipe then it will show you where to drill, select a suitable sized drill bit and you should be pretty much there.
