HELP: DOOR LOCKING PROBLEM!

Morning All,

I was hoping that I can call on the members experiance with this one, as I am having a very odd, and slightly worrying problem with my central locking.

First things first, it is a 92 car with manual (i.e. not remote) C/L.

Basicaly, not long after getting the car, the central locking on the drivers side only worked to lock both doors, but would only unlock the drivers door. Not too big a problem, but the security lamp was now not coming on. I thought that this meant that the alarm was not working either - however a cat at 2am on Friday morning proved me wrong on that....

The *really* odd and worrying thing is that when I was a Oulton Park yesterday, I would lock the car, go away, come back and find that the car had unlocked itself. It first I though somone had tried to break in, but there was no evidance.

So I tried some experiments - I locked the car (several times) and watched it to see if it would unlock again. Sure eough, the car would unlock itself between 5 amd 25 mins after me locking it.

I have solved this temporarily by taking the fuse out for the Central Locking, but obviously I want to get this fixed ASAP.

Has anyone had this problem before? Can anyone help?

There is a common problem with the door locking actuator mechanism. However the usual symptom of this, is a repeated clunking from the door, after locking or unlocking. This is becuase the system doesn't think the door is locked or unlocked and keeps trying. It doesn't make the door unlock. I have sometimes found that my door lock is very sensitive, meaning I can lock the door, then when turning the key back to take it out, the door unlocks, like I've turned a bit too far. It's not possible that the alarm is unlocking the door is it?

To be honest I am not sure! I thought I might have "overriden the Lockout Prevention Feature" [see page 45 of the UK owners manual], but this doesn't seam to be the case.

I was hoping someone might have had a similar problem and there may be a simple fix. If not then it is off to the HMD, which will probably cost me an arm, a leg, and my first born child to fix....

I have had the same problem with the drivers door today, I had taken the door apart to change my window regulator, after reassembling the car would lock ok, (manually and with remote) but then the drivers door would unlock a few minutes later, What i discovered was the cable that attachs to the door handle has a rubber section that "clips" in to a support by the handle, it was clipped in to the furthest of its three ribbed bits, by moving it to the middle bit the problem was solved. All you need to do is slide the leather cover out from behind the door handle and adjust where the cable is clipped in. Hope this helps.

...Sadly this doesn't seam to be the cause of my problem - I slackened off the cable (it was on the centre grove both sides anyway), but then I couldn't open the doors from the inside!

I tried it anyway, but the locks still pop open, so it looks like a software / solonoid / sensor problem.

Thanks for your help anyway Leigh - it's a handy hint for other owners at least.

Any other ideas?

I had a similar problem with my first car...an Escort that I thought was possessed, it would unlock itself at night or a little while after locking, or repeatedly lock/unlock over and over.

If I can remember correctly, I had to remove the actual motor, open it up and clean all contacts. i probably cleaned all points of electrical contact and this solved the problem.

This was after I had all sorts trying to fix the problem and eventually pulling it apart was the last thing I could do before going shooting myself in the head after torching the car. There was definitley a dirty contact within the motor housing. It never happened again after that.

Good luck hunting for it though. It was bitch of a job in the Escort, so I don't know how easy Mr Honda's made it for you.
