Thread: Tuning Potential

  1. Default Tuning Potential

I'm not sure if this will be frowned upon as I'm not familiar with the Mk1 NSX or if it has a modding/tuning culture following. I'm going to assume it has.

I come from a strongly orientated tuning background having had four gtrs in the past three years.

I also have strong links to a lot of tuning firms and as a result am planning what to do first once the NSX arrives.

I just wondered if anyone else here would be interested in tinkering with the thing or if you think because of the price of the new car it won't be a popular plan.

My preferred tuning firm, Litchfield, have just tuned a GT-R with stock engine to over 800bhp and thanks to a brilliant pair of aftermarket log manifolds, they managed to make it spool faster than stock both on the road and the dyno.

I'm thinking that if something similar can be done for the NSX engine, the resulting combination along with the electric motors will be on a par with all the hypercars currently on the market.

I'm waiting for next month to find out what the stock spec is, but I'm thinking similar exhaust and ecu development could yield some enormous gains, if it does end up with a similar size V6 to the GTR.

Only thing is I'd worry about the heat built up in a mid engine design, and also I have zero experience of tuning direct injection cars.

Just wondering if anyone else has any thoughts on the prospect.

    Hi Adamantium

Tunning to the standard engine in NA is rather limited without changing parts with engine manifold, exhausts, cam etc as it is already in a high state of tune with reliability in mind. There are lots of FI already tested on the car in the US...look at NSXPrime.com :

    Good luck

I'm talking about tuning the second gen car which comes with FI from the factory. Before I knew that I only put the deposit down in the hope it would be good. Now I know I will keep the car.

Doubt that anyone outside Honda knows what state of tune the standard car will have on delivery. But you can bet your bottom dollar that some of the bigger US-based NSX specialists will be cranking up the boost as soon as they get their paws on one.

But for the moment it's all guess work.

If it can be driven it can be tuned, it is just a matter of money as in everything.

It's all about who can crack the ECUs I guess, but surely it will be hideously complicated when it comes to managing the electric motors which - i assume - will be torque fill. Therefore, how do you make the powerband make sense unless you increase BHP via the petrol motors AND electric motors at the same time

I'm sure this will eventually be answered, as in 10 years i guess superminis will be similarly powered, but i'd be very impressed if anyone can tune an new NSX. I suppose the question is if anyone has done it with the likes of the McLaren P1? How about even the more 'simple' Veyron (i've never heard of one tuned)?

I can see why you'd be intrigued - the potential is there. Surely even stock it will be very quick with AWD, turbos and three electric motors!

    Wait for the type-R;

Tuning the behaviour of the hybrid SH-AWD system will be problematical; it's got 11 heat exchangers already, I understand. As will heat management. And will the 9DCT handle it?

The turbos look as if they might be axial, too.

Freakin' nightmare, if you ask me.

But good luck, if you like aggro and colossal expense.

“I find myself irresistibly attracted to cars that nobody else buys. The NSX is a classic of the genre because nobody buys it and yet it’s a fantastic car. It’s got a wonderful compactness and simplicity and unpretentiousness to it. Honda rudely continues to make them whether we like it or not, even though there can be no commercial logic in doing so — I thoroughly admire that.” Rowan Atkinson

From what I have read (mainly hearsay and conjecture I know) I'm not convinced that Honda have landed on this yet!

    Gordon Murray knows.
    Rowan Atkinson knows.
    It's the Honda NSX."
