Introducing the Spoon Sports Monoblock 4 piston forged aluminium front brake caliper.

Here is Spoon's philosophy behind the creation of this awesome product:

In sports driving, it's really all about the braking. Pressing down on the brake pedal, the nose dives and the driver fights the rear with steering and gas pedal control. Our caliper development focuses on that very moment of excitement. We start from designing the cast. Applying precision aluminum forging technology, the caliper is designed with a 4-piece opposed monocoque structure with variable diameter pistons. The forged caliper support is deeply inserted to the caliper body to securely embrace the hub knuckle. Such design enhances the overall rigidity, minimizing drag torque and bias-wear of brake pads. As the next corner opens its jaws, the driver can fully commit to the last braking point, making the rear follow his lead. Only after mastering the art of braking, the true sensation of sports driving will be rewarded to the driver. Commitment to the true essence of driving. That is where all begins with Spoon.

By means of stress analysis, we can derive the optimum surface pressure distribution on the brake pads. Incorporating such data, we were able to minimize bias-wear and balance the pressure on the pad surface. Parallel to such desk-top analysis, we spent time participating in the Nurburgring 24 hour races and other endurance events. From there, we gathered valuable real-time data and experience that was essential to our R&D.

The caliper features a forged aluminum body offering minimal weight, plus freedom in design using purpose-built secondary fabrication equipment. The variable diameter pistons placed in opposed position delivers balanced pad pressure. We exposed the calipers to extensive testing to detect the slightest change in brake fluid pressure and minimizing the knock-back amount of caliper pistons, all for the sake of improving brake performance.

Spoon gathered data from numerous road tests and Nissin provided CAE and other analysis of the caliper body. Product development was carried out with such partnership. Sharing driver feedback, such as braking feel and quality, is essential in product development. Long hours were consumed changing combination factors like the tires, rims, rotor size, pads and drive systems.

The calipers were tested with impractical heavy loads. The graph illustrates stress distribution of the calipers under such conditions. Implementing new ideas such as drilling and shaving the body to create air flow, the finished product became a rigid but light-weight, well-balanced caliper.

    What we say

The Spoon Monoblock caliper is the perfect addition for any Honda NSX owner that is looking to take their braking performance to the next level. Whist is it sleek and beautiful in design it offers many performance benefits. Developed in connection with NISSIN (OEM Honda brake manufacture) the caliper retains perfect balance and the use of the factory ABS systems. Manufactured from lightweight aluminum it reduces unsprung weight in increases brake cooling efficiency. Pedal modulation and braking control is greatly improved allowing the driver more confidence.

We love the Spoon caliper not just because of the performance benefits but the options it gives with friction materials. Unlike most aftermarket brake kits the Spoon caliper utilizes a Honda S2000 brake pad profile and the late NSX NA1 140> / NA2 front brake disc. This gives the user huge choice in affordable aftermarket brake disc and pad compounds.

I keep toying with the idea of Spoon calipers but what about the rears?

I am afraid that Spoon don't have a solution for the rears. However the spoon claspers are designed to work with the Honda balance so they won't affect the bias of the brakes. A well chosen balance and be achieved with carefully selected pads and discs. We could help you find this with DIXCEL compounds.

What size front wheel are these designed to work with?

The Monoblocks will fit under most 16 inch wheels. Some will require spacers due to the added width of the caliper. The standard 16's will need about 15mm I believe from memory.

Are you Sure they fit under oem 16's with a 15mm spacer? As i recall the radius is too large..

I cannot comment for the very early wheels 91-94 but the 16 inch from 94< shouldn't be a problem other than spacer. The disc remains the later 298mm and the Spoon Monoblocks were designed for use with 16 inch wheels. Happy to be corrected. If anyone wishes to offer up a car for test fitment - let me know.
