SGS Engineering, damper strut re-gas service

As mentioned in my previous blog
http://www.nsxcb.co.uk/blog.php?1811...%20engineering
sent the boot lid struts to SGS.

As always, the engineers at SGS Engineering were very helpful.

Unfortunately, this time,
the wear on the strut shaft (the pair with red paint) was beyond the level that
the engineers were happy to re-gas so they recommended me
not to do so and replace them with the new ones.

I sent my spare pair (no paint on ball stud) and again,
they were also in the same bad condition.

So, spoke with the owner and
we decided to replace his pair (red paint) with the new OEM one.

SGS Engineering sells new one from NitroLift including
the end fittings.
If you want, you can even specify the custom stroke length so
for the case of engine glass hatch, you can increase the lifting height,
like the one from SoS.

I may consider this option in the future as it may help me
when working on the engine and gbox.
I don't follow service manual for taking the gbox out so
having extra lift on engine hatch glass helps me a lot.

For my spare struts,
I asked whether they can re-gas them with acknowledgement that
they may loose the gas earlier than expected and thus,
happy for not being covered by their warranty.

SGS was very kind enough to try it just one strut first to confirm
that it can at least hold the gas and then re-gassed both of them.

As in the above photo,
they were re-gassed to this specific strut rating of 500Nm.
They also engraved the pressure spec and month/year on the body.

My existing ones are still fine but
I may just try these re-gassed ones to see
how long they are going to survive even
these were not recommended to be re-gassed.

Thank you to SGS Engineering for all their support.

So, the two OEM gas dampers that were originally recommended not to be re-gassed by SGS in Dec/12 (as above) held quite well over the last 2 years but now they are starting to show the weakness again.

I can get these OEM dampers from Japan fairly easily and considering the life span, they are not that expensive but if your existing ones are in good shape, re-gassing is very cost effective.
Will keep monitoring and probably replace them with new ones some point this year as the boot lid won't stay open on a very windy day.
Doesn't look nice when trying to put the heavy salt tablet for the water softner into the boot while holding the lid with one's head.....
