Eng Refresh Stage 1 – 08

As mentioned in the previous post; Eng Refresh Stage 1 – 06, the locking pin won’t
fit at the front bank exhaust side on early model engine even at the
correct valve timing so you should not rely on the holes at the holder plate and
cam shaft for the valve timing.

One of the reason why people make mistake during the TB service.

Although the valve timing was wrong, checked the valve clearance at #5 cyl and
they were within the spec.

Backed off all of the valve clearance adjuster before removing the cam shafts.

As expected for such a low mileage engine, all 12 original design LMA were
still smooth and no popping noise so no need to replace them.
It depends on the driving conditions so can’t be judged by the mileage but
in Japan, with the stop and go driving condition,
the original design one tends to make noise before reaching 60K miles.

Started to remove the cam shafts.

Typical low mileage and low usage engine.
Although the inside of the engine was very clean,
the engine oil was probably not replaced regularly and thus,
there were bit extra residue on the cam holder compared to the
engine used everyday with regular oil change.

Ah......
Someone was really keen to seal the WP........

Honda bond used all the way around the WP gasket.......
No need to use it as the mating surface should be cleaned properly.

It’s going to take some time cleaning the mating surface because of this........

I just hope the person replaced the WP last time didn’t put Honda bond at
the two dowel pins as it’s going to be difficult to remove them.......

Cam shafts removed.
Super clean engine.

Looking at the way the Honda bond was applied, the excess amount used at
the cam seal area especially at the front bank and some of the Honda bond not
applied properly resulting in entering the cam journal area (not good),
I have a feeling that someone removed the cam shaft in the past although
I couldn’t find any receipt for it.

In fact, all I found was the receipt for the TB, WP and short parts but
not for other parts or especially the labour of last TB service...........

Looks like something was trapped on the #3cyl intake rocker arm.
There was scratch marking on both the cam lobe and rocker arm surface.

Also, excess amount of liquid gasket was applied at the cam holders and
managed to get inside the cam journal area resulting in slight uneven
wear but nothing serious.

Will inspect each parts carefully after cleaning them.

More to follow later.
