ABS Upgrade (non-NSX), Health Check 04

Rate this Entry

Quick run through of Highest priority items based on the Health Check.
The owner already got the email with extra info plus other lower priority items.

Please address these with the time frame of about 3 - 4 years in mind.

In fact, many of them should have been addressed long time ago but probably not spotted or being delayed.
Same things happening on almost all car models.
The previous owners didn't spot some of the issues or decided not to carry out the services at that point.
Later, new issue emerged and found out that it's related or make sense to deal with the old issues at the same time.
Due to significant cost required in one go, decided to sell the car without fixing the issues.

Unfortunately, if someone didn't spot these issues before the purchase and became the new owner, suddenly, realises the huge cost involved in putting the car back to normal.
So, again, being sold to the used car market and the condition of the car gets worse and worse as the un-fixed issues bites into the car further slowly but steadily.

One benefit of NSX is that even if you replace a certain parts with a new one at certain part of the car, it's very unlikely to cause new issue on the old parts at the same area that were not replaced at the same time.
On other car models, quite often, the new parts stresses the old ones and tends to create new issues around the same area.

Although the new parts quality degraded for our NSX, still, many of the new parts would last similar amount of the life as the replaced one apart from some of the known items such as the coolant header tank. Even with the new one and taking care of the specific installation method, it could start seeping even within 12 months….

Radiator
Leaking but crystallisation of coolant is sealing it for now and dry.
With thermal shock, it would get worse. One day, you would see few drips on the floor so please replace it within this year.

Brake Master Cyl

If you follow the specific test method, you would notice the pedal being sunk, like once in ten test sessions.
You won't notice it during the normal driving environment so it's at the early stage of the complete failure.
One owner experienced his brake pedal sunk while in the traffic but didn't feel it again even for another 24 months.
Since it's brake related, I don't recommend waiting that long so please address it at the earliest possible opportunity.

Brake caliper OH, parking brake cable L-shaped lever/cam at the caliper
FR wheel showing tiny amount of drag but won't be detected by the MOT roller unless you use your hand.
Rear set felt heavy especially at the RR side.
Unless removing some of the parts, can't visually check it but since this NSX is AT and the owner probably didn't use parking brake for a long time, the L-shaped lever/cam at the caliper where the parking brake cable is connected by a small pin has rusted and seized resulting in imbalanced parking brake force.

The observations are backed up by the squeaking pad noise when applying gentle brake pressure on leaving the garage or at slow speed.
The piston is not getting back smoothly.

Big dent - oil pan

Not the first time and happened on many NSX.
As the current owner drives very gently and mainly on UK road, the G force won't be high enough causing the oil starvation but still, not good.
As I helped Honda garage with this NSX, I know another repair was done at the oil pan so just replace it.

Crank pulley - AT spec
Very rare for AT spec crank pulley to fail like we saw on the MT one.
Still, it looked as if it's the original one from the factory.
You don't want gambling with its life and considering the age, replace it in the future and forget it for another xx years.
It lasted that long.
