ABS Upgrade (non-NSX), Health Check 01

Rate this Entry

These days, I would just post the photos with my short comment directly written inside it but on this occasion, it's more of keeping my own notes for the future so I'm going to add extra comment.

Doing emergency ABS Upgrade for one owner at the moment.
The famous ABS (ALB) light after 2min once the ABS pump was triggered.
it happened all of a sudden.

After initial investigation, it was confirmed that either the ABS pump itself was dead or the accumulator was completely punctured.

No high pressure fluid at all at the accumulator and even after manually activating the ABS pump, no fluid can be transferred to the accumulator.

Considering the usage of this NSX and after discussing with the owner, we came to a conclusion that instead of investing into repairing the existing unit or sourcing another used classic ABS, it would be far better upgrading to the modern one body Bosch style ABS but using the used non-NSX modulator to start with.
Later, if the owner wants, it can be swapped with the new NSX modulator without replacing any brackets or pipes and just the ABS upgrade loom pin out change.

In my view, on public road, you are better off having at least some sort of ABS than having faulty ABS or deleting it.

Even before I got all the parts from Japan, the owner already bought the used AP1 S2000 ABS modulator at the fraction of the price of the new NSX one.

On the bench, I set up the ABS system and connected the Fail Safe Relay +B (FSR +B), Motor Relay +B (MR +B), GND (GND1 & GND2), IGP2 (IG2), Brake pedal switch (STOP), ABS light control (WALP) and the SCS (SCS).
So, everything except the 4 x raw w/speed sensor input and the 4 x filtered/level converted w/speed signal output for TCS were connected.

The purpose was to check the logic side of the used AP1 modulator as you don't want finishing the installation only to find that the used modulator had problems.

To start with, read the existing error code stored on the used unit.
It got #11 (FR w/speed open/short) and #17 (RL w/speed open/short).
As you would expect, same code shared among different models so same for the NSX.

Now that I read the error code, tried resetting the system but for some reason, couldn't proceed to the 2nd step after the initial ABS light On-Off stage.
May be I need to connect at least some of the w/speed sensor input???

I could have used the 1kohm resistor crimped to the correct spare terminals but faster to just modify the ABS upgrade loom on my NSX so tried it that way.

By the way, I always get the same question so to answer it, the label on the one body Bosch style ABS modulator is not the OEM parts no..
It's parts manufature's in-house one.

As a pre-caution, read the error code again and ovbiously, it showed the same code #11 and #17.
