NSX Key

The owner wanted to replace his key as the existing ones were showing the sign of fatigue.
The top section of the key was covered in rubber like material and it already deteriorated and causing problem when trying to remove the key from the cyl.
I think this rubber like material on the key is UK or EU (and possibly other countries) model specific as it is not used on JDM or US Acura models.
Checked the compatibility of the key from JDM and it was fine so tried to order it from Japan.
Unfortunately, they were no longer available in Japan as they were treated as an accessory item and thus, after the completion of the NSX production, there will be no further batch once the stock is gone.
So, contacted Tim at Acura of Peoria.
He is well known to the members of NSX Prime and although there are lots of other vendors there, I always ask him for the support as he knows what to be written on the Invoice for the international delivery.
Quite often, when ordering the parts from abroad, you could be paying too much duty and tax due to the mistake on the paperwork.
You can claim it back later but it takes long time and also you need to contact the courier company to obtain several information and then fill in the specific form which will take up further precious time.
Best to sort the document out at the time of order.
The owner wanted to have the Monel (Titanium like colour) Main key and two spare (black with red NSX logo) ones.
Interesting enough, another owner of the NSX that I will be start working on around August time requested exactly the same order so asked Tim to double the number of the keys.
Not a great photo as the Monel ones are protected carefully in the bag.
With the discount, the Monel one (35113-SL0-A11) was about US$88 and the Spare one (35113-SL0-A01) was about US$12 each.
Delivery charge was about US$30.
I paid about GBP44 (about GBP36 for import VAT and GBP8 for clearance fee) to UK Customs for the six keys so GBP22 for each owners.
As my NSX is JDM, I can’t speak from my experience but for UK model, if you have the tiny silver plate with a certain digits number on it, I think you may be able to ask Honda dealer to cut the key on delivery.
JDM uses different system but I won’t tell it for the security reason.
However, the material used on the spare NSX key is nothing special so you should be able to ask your local key cutting service to duplicate your existing one.
This is not the case for the Monel main NSX key.
Monel is an interesting material and if you apply any force, it kind of increases the hardness.
Therefore, you must take your Monel key to a special locksmith and tell that the key is made of Monel.
Otherwise, not only it will destroy your new Monel key but also it could damage the key cutting machine as well.
Hope the owners can find good place to cut these keys.
