Seized bolt and nut – info from our member ‘Graham’

Rate this Entry

From time to time, I experienced big issue with the seized bolts and nuts on our NSX.

It is a classic car and considering the amount of salt in the air during the winter period, I’m not surprised with this.

Following information was supplied from our member ‘Graham’ on this site.

He already successfully tested this method and managed to remove the heavily corroded bolt that I could only rotate but not being able to push out from its place.

If you search the web with the word ‘kroil, acetone, ATF’, you will find lots of related information.

Please note that I haven’t tried this method yet (but about to try) and it sounded like this mixture of fluid could dissolve/penetrate through many materials so please be careful with handling of this.

Graham told me that he managed to create a small hole on his driveway….

Also, from my experience dealing with the acetone, please wear suitable protective material before handling this fluid.

Acetone will evaporate so fast that if this fluid gets in contact with your skin, it will penetrate and gets under your skin before you can wipe it off.

This means that any harsh chemical/material dissolved in the fluid could stay under your skin for many years.

The fluid consists of pure acetone and ATF at 1:1 rate.

Carefully apply it to the seized bolt/nut and wait for a while.

You may be able to break the seizure that you couldn’t break with commercially available other penetrating oil.

I don’t know the effect of this fluid on the rubber bush so not going to use it on the seized caster adjuster at the compliance pivot until I have access to the spare used parts and try it first.

Thank you Graham for sharing this info.

Regards,
Kaz
