The standard procedure of treating the VR with contact cleaner.
It will prevent white noise when rotating the volume ring.

I normally don’t clean the internal display as I don’t want leaving any dust, scratch marking, etc but
with this head unit, it looked so poor with trace of liquid and some sort of debris trapped there that
I wanted to make it look better.

After looking at the damages done to the flex circuit board, I was not sure whether I can recover this audio head unit but
initial testing showed no short/open circuit and it managed to pass through enough current on my test circuit without
burning anything so decided to give it a go.

I found several cassette tapes inside the glove box so the owner seemed to use it.
Gave good cleaning on the cassette module and reset the cleaning indicator.

The moment of truth.
I’m glad to report that the signal level from all 4ch are fine and all functions recovered including the CD features.

The display looks so much better now.

The push buttons and rings were tired and scratched but I have new JDM spec spares so will ask the owner on
what he wants to do with them.
Some owners actually prefer to keep the tired looking ones as they show more of ‘retro’ looking.

Kept the system running for more than 48Hrs almost continuously with just about 5min break
when moving it from one place to the other.

During the day, I kept running it under the direct sun light to cook it as much as possible.

Then, once it got dark, moved the unit to the tiled floor close to the door to run it in cold condition.

Over these period, I didn’t see noticeable changes in current consumption so
looks like the damaged flex circuit board is holding.

I’m happy with the result and will install back into the car together with
USA Spec PA11-HON connected at the CD changer port.

The original CD changer will come off.
I may try it on the bench to see whether it will work or not.

Another head unit saved.
