Emergency Gauge/Tail Light Assy service 01

Rate this Entry

A while ago, one owner contacted me for the famous ‘BRAKE LAMP’ warning issue followed by the
parking brake indicator triggered and disabling both the ABS and TCS after 30sec.....

I serviced this NSX in the past and already knew that occasionally, this issue was showing up but
recommended the temporary fix and asked the owner to keep eye on the warning light frequency
as it could get worse.

Well, the warning light is now permanently On even without touching the brake pedal after
tuning the IG key into P2 On position so it got worse.

Not sure this is UK model specific but compared to the JDM, there is a condition that could trigger
this warning light and parking brake indicator before touching the brake pedal but
it was not the case with this NSX.

For the record, even with the parking brake released and brake pedal never touched after turning the IG key into P2,
the ‘BRAKE LAMP’ warning and the parking brake indicator stayed On immediately after turning the IG key into P2.

If you start driving under this status, it will trigger both the ABS and TCS warning lights as the controllers think that
the car was driven with the parking brake not released.

As the owner doesn’t feel comfortable driving without ABS, the fact that the issue got worse and
I'm quite worried about the potential small fire at the gauge,
asked the owner to bring his NSX to me for the emergency service although it would delay other owner’s services.

It was very good decision.
Already one of the capacitor was burnt/melted partially with excessive heat but due to its lower height, it didn’t melt the gauge housing.

Lots and lots of acid leakage around the custom made hybrid IC controlling the warning display and
if this was damaged, one needs to find spare module as it’s not available on the market and
I don’t have used one.

I just hope repairing the circuit tracks and pads will fix one of the reason for getting the warning light and
the hybrid IC is not damaged yet….

The trip and odometer were very dirty so will clean them as much as possible.
The reset mechanism of the trip meter was also not smooth so will apply silicone grease.

Illumination light bulbs were just so black that I’m going to replace all of them.

Lots of washing around the gauge housing required….

Just experienced the "famous brake lamp" problem,in my case just a failed bulb on the way to my granddaughters birthday party. Quite a surprise when all the warning lights lit up! The service manager at my local Honda dealer hadn't heard that one before.
