Audio Head Unit Service 01

Rate this Entry

Met with another owner over Easter and will be working on another NSX from today.

In the meantime, have been working on another head unit.
The owner bought this from outside UK and sent it to me for inspection and refurbishment.

Before opening the unit, there was no obvious short circuit so powered it up on the bench.
Didn’t check on the oscilloscope but unlike some of the previous units that I didn’t even bother carrying out any services, it operated fine with small imbalance in output between the channels using the same AMP.

Just minor scratch markings on the face panel but majority of them will be hidden behind the centre console.

As always, the outer rings and push buttons were scratched and looked tired.
Later, we discussed this and going to replace them with the new ones.

It uses diversity system on the FM radio tuner so the circuit board and display module are quite different from European spec head unit and it involves extra task for disassembly but then there is no need to strengthen the ACC line so similar time required for the service.

And we just caught the issue in time.

It’s not easy to take good photo but part of the circuit board surface was covered in puddle of leaked acid from the capacitors.
However, the contamination was not too deep so only minimum damages were done to the board and components.

Cleaning and then quick coating over the scraped area.

Some of the caps replaced.

Wow, looks like the cassette player was heavily used in the past.

The rubber roller and the shaft were left without any cleaning that they were already stained in brown.
Can’t do much so just quick cleaning of these and proper cleaning of the head in one direction.

Contact cleaner applied to the volume module and cleaned the multiple contacts.

Both volume modules were bit loose so tightened them with blue Loctite.

Thanks Kaz, do you have anything documented on how to disassemble the head unit?

    Great write up...

No documentation but it’s Alpine so pretty much straightforward if you have electronics background and they don’t use special in-house connectors.
Diversity system requires extra task of removing aerial connection and extra screws.
Make sure to release the electrostatic charge from your body and just try it.
