Audio Head Unit Service (well, sort of…) 01

Rate this Entry

Since latter part of last year, had to put priority on things happening back in Japan so not much time updating the blog recently and over the last few weeks, not feeling well but finally getting back to normal speed....

While working on another NSX, two owners contacted me with their used audio head unit that they purchased from somewhere.

On NSX Prime and Japanese auction sites, although the frequency band and number of aerial inputs (European model: single input, JDM/US: diversity system so two aerials) are different, you can find OEM used one at around US$500 – 650.
European spec is very rare so that may push the used parts price higher but I would assume it will be the similar price range of below GBP500.
Based on this, I have my own policy of limiting the max service cost of my audio head unit service and if it looks to be exceeding this, I ask the owners to find another known good working unit for refurbishment or consider the aftermarket route than trying to repair the heavily damaged one.

Until last summer, I was fortunate enough not to encounter with heavily damaged head unit but then, one owner brought this one;

I haven’t given up on it yet and still checking the board against my JDM unit although the circuit board design is different so not an easy task…..

Then, recently, these two units arrived at my place.

With one unit, someone tried doing something by adding MOV on the CD signal for no apparent reason…..

There were even some rust observed at both dial shafts.

The damage was just so severe that I recommended the owner to find another unit.

If the owner allows, I may try replacing some of the ICs if I can get hold of them but for now, I’m going to leave them as they are because the owner may want to claim compensation from the seller or may use some of the remaining parts to repair another unit that he may be able to get.......
