Eunos Roadster (Mazda MX-5, Miata) Camshaft Angle Sensor – CAS 02

The replacement sensor was delivered quickly from Belgium and the engine already successfully fired up.

The failed sensor.

I only needed the black thin sensor circuit board but it was not available from Mazda and considering the age, mileage and surrounding environment (mounted on the engine and driven directly by camshaft), decided to replace the whole assy.
There are remanufactured assy from third parties and even found replacement circuit board from another part of the world but not sure of its durability.

The trigger disc.
The outer trigger generates the SGT signal for each cyl and the inner one generates the SGC signal showing the TDC of #1 and #4 cyl.
The SGC sensor failed on my engine and because of this, ECU disabled all 4 INJ after detection of error code #3 and thus, just initial catch with no further combustion.

The new OEM sensor.

It’s driven directly by the exhaust camshaft so big thick o-ring required to prevent the eng oil from seeping out.

As it’s a new sensor, you will need to adjust the base IG timing using the timing light and jumper wire to disable the feedback loop of the ECU.

Happy with the result so disconnect the GND cable from the battery to erase the error code from the ECU memory.

Now I can go back servicing the NSX…..
