Health Check, Annual Service 01

Considering the delivery schedule from Bigg Red and also the efficiency of the service, decided to work on another NSX last week while keeping another one on the lift.

The service menu is to carry out the Health Check together with my customised annual service menu including the compression check.

The owner also told me that he had battery power loss recently and couldn’t get any lights on the dash at all although the CTEK battery conditioner responded so it wasn’t completely flat.
Many years ago, I knew this NSX had battery drain issue but at that time I couldn’t re-create the excessive current draw while parked but the battery was dead and since it was still within the warranty period, my local Honda garage was kind enough to replace it with a new one.

So, first thing first, after the owner left my place, started the engine without any issues.
After that, started the engine several times with several hours in between and no issues whatsoever.

As I knew I’m going to start the engine again in 2 days time, I didn’t bother connecting the battery conditioner.

After carrying out the Health Check, test driving session, etc, etc, after 2 days, tried to crank the engine and while the starter tried to rotate the engine (probably just 1 turn), it lost the force and rapid clicking sound of relay reset started behind the seat.

Typical phenomenon when you don’t have enough juice left in the battery together with how the security system was wired but loosing battery power just within 2 days???

Jump started the engine using the Powerall Power Bank as seen on here;

Very useful jump battery and I just carry it in my NSX glove box.

As I couldn’t see any excessive current under this condition, wanted to fit my spare old battery for further analysis but before doing so, double checked the condition of the GND cable (it was replaced in the past so still looked like new) including the GND point at the chassis side and the positive terminal as well.

No issues and even with this old used battery with unknown age, it fired up the engine immediately so it was not connection issue and definitely something is draining the current while the car was parked but only under specific condition.

I thought it was the security motion sensor detecting my movement while working on another NSX but no difference in current reading, locked the door using the key instead of remote fob of the security, locked the door from passenger side instead of driver one, etc, etc and still couldn’t see any huge current draining while parked.

I now know the owner parks the car under different condition so next time when this NSX is at my place, I’ll try to do the same and compare the current consumption.
For now, I just gave my old spare battery because there was no point in replacing it with a new one when we both knew that it will kill the new battery as the issue is still there.

I have already returned this NSX to the owner so just doing catch up……

From the Test Driving Session……

Very juddery CL at bite point but no slip under load. Probably the friction disc and flywheel surfaces are contaminated/corroded. Just needs to drive your NSX regularly.

No service history of MTF but the shift felt very smooth and not notchy at all so didn’t replace MTF even for this time.

PO: 2.3kgf/cm2 at idle rpm, 5.0kgf/cm2 at cruising rpm
TW: half indicator below the horizontal line
VB: 14.1V at idle rpm, 14.5 – 14.8V at cruising

Alignment slightly towards to the right but very tiny.
On some straight line road, the steering was pointing straight so it was that tiny amount.
Going through the roundabout was not comfortable at all. Probably due to the rear tyre combination and the condition. Later, found out that the RL lower A-arm front bush had split so that had an effect as well.

Despite the wear at the rear brake pad, the pedal feeling and stopping power were very good.
Just going to replace the brake fluid this time.

Some of the notes from the Health Check.

Driver side window glass alignment is not great. Lots of gap at the rear sash.

The rear edge of the door glass at the driver side was really close to the outer B-pillar panel.
Because of this, part of the weatherstrip was flipped.

Please be careful not to damage this really expensive targa weatherstrip….
