Drive Shaft OH 01

Rate this Entry
Have been refurbishing the pair of drive shafts for a while but as I injured my finger recently, couldn’t update the blog.

The old tired right side drive shaft. Even before opening the joint, I can tell that the offset between the inboard and outboard is wrong so someone has already opened it in the past.

Yes indeed, the 60deg offset between the two spiders were not followed. This will increase the stress level on the joint and rollers.

After dealing with that smelly and broken down old greases, finally managed to clean the joint to this level and started the inspection.
Some of the joints showed hard stress markings. Looks like it either lost significant amount of grease in the past or the grease simply broke down too far.

Rollers waiting to be disassembled and inspected.

In the meantime, painting the shafts and joints.

Disassembled and cleaned the rollers.
Each joint consists of 3 rollers and each roller contains 10s of needle bearings….. And you have 4 joints so you must be prepared dealing with the 12 rollers…..

Planting the needle bearings…..
The smell of the grease.......
Dealing with these endless numbers of bearings is not good for your eyes……..
