Koyo Rad, Cooling Sys, Washer motor 01

Rate this Entry

Started to work on another NSX this week.
The service menu is to replace the leaky radiator with all aluminium Koyo Rad, replace coolant hoses, etc.
While the radiator is out of the way, I'll be looking at the dead washer motor as well.
Also, will provide the owner with the parts required for overhauling the early spec brake caliper.

Normally, I carry out the test driving session before start of the service to check the base line but I already knew that the radiator was seeping the coolant last time when I looked at it.

This time, when I checked it again, it got even worse so not going to risk the possibility of loosing the coolant during the test driving session so started removing the parts without any test driving.

I think I'm going to have fun removing this rad fan shroud bolt at the bottom side of the rad.....
The rust already chewed into the plastic bracket and I hope it won't snap off the plastic parts....

While draining the coolant, wanted to re-coil the issue I found last time at one of the bolt thread on the Eng-Gbox stiffener.
The damage was too wide at the entrance of the bolt hole for the standard re-coil so had to use longer bolt and get the re-coil at deeper position.
Managed to achieve the targeted torque but it may not survive if the bolt was loosened many times in the future so at that point, best to use Timesert instead.

The coolant hoses at the centre floor were all soft and tired. Not punctured yet so didn't cause any issues but they were not far from breaking down.
Some corrosion at one of the pipe but not too bad.

Apology for the poor focus. Was trying to tell that almost 80% of the cooling fins were squashed and thus, the cooling efficiency would be really low.

The dead washer motor.
It was completely seized that on the bench, it will hit the current limiter if I set the bench power supply at 5A limit with 12.5V. Could go all the way upto 10A limit but not much point as I won't be re-using it.

As you know, European model has headlight washer addition to the windshield one whereas JDM only has the latter one.
However, the motor spec for the windshield washer is different between the European model and JDM.
European one uses higher pressure spec, probably something to do with the higher speed limit.

Initially, I thought I won't be able to order European spec washer motor in Japan and had to go to HUK price of more than GBP50 for just a simple motor.
Turned out, I was able to place the order even in Japan and managed to get it at GBP16 before leaving Japan so even after paying for the delivery charge (minimum) and UK Customs, much cheaper than HUK price.

Not much to report while installing the coolant hoses....

More to follow later.
