Front Wheel Speed Signal Quality Issue – Solved

Rate this Entry

A while ago, I helped one owner who was suffering from multiple issues with his ABS and other areas.

Original blog entry here

On his NSX, almost every time when the car was about to stop, the brake pedal got high frequency kick back even none of the wheels were locked and yet no ABS warning light was triggered.

After discussing with the owner regarding his NSX usage, cost effectiveness and where he wants to be, we decided to upgrade the ABS to the latest spec.

The old ABS controller was not even able to detect any issues on this NSX but the latest spec ABS brain had more CPU power that it managed to find the issue and triggered the #14 ABS Error code.

This was for the FL wheel speed sensor signal quality issue.

After waiting for more than one month, finally the replacement sensors arrived and the owner brought back his NSX over the weekend.

As the owner wanted to drive back his NSX on the same day, he went for the restaurant area and also spent the rest of the day at the nearby shopping centre while I was looking after his NSX.

As inspected in the past, both Front Left and Right wheel speed sensors were showing almost the same resistance as the ones at the rear.

Therefore, you won’t be able to tell whether the sensor is good or bad from its resistance figure.

It was decided to replace both Front sensors at the same time.

The new sensors.

As expected, the sensors were bonded to the front knuckle due to heavy oxidation and therefore, they had to be pushed out by removing the wheel bearing/hub first.

The heavy oxidation had to be thoroughly cleaned so took quite long time for the process.

After smoothing the surface, applied silicone grease around the hole and sensor body and O-ring.

Installed the new sensor and put the brake calliper back in its place.

Went out for the test driving session with the owner and very good news.

For the first time in many years, there was no more brake pedal kick back.

When on purposely locked the wheels, the ABS kicked in properly.

The owner was very happy to be able to enjoy his NSX again without worrying about the brake pedal.

Another happy owner.
