Despite the very wet cyl block from the oil seepage, the oil pan was very dry with no leakage from the gasket.
From the colour of the drain bolt and trace of black liquid gasket, I’m quite sure this was replaced in the past.

    Very good decision.

As pointed out to the owner last time, it was possible that the noise was coming from the cracked welding at the exh. bracket.

So, to test it, I applied high temp non-melting grease into the cracked section.

It made some difference but still some noise was there.

There were two exh pipes with only about 2mm gap at the rear left side of the aftermarket exhaust but even when ...

  3. CAT & Exh. area noise revisited… Part 1

    by , 08-02-2011 at 11:31 PM (Today at Atelier Kaz - ex-Honda R&D, F1, Indy/CART engineer)

Recently, I worked on one of the NSX for the squeaking noise caused by the Front CAT heat shield scratching against the metal bar at the aftermarket diffuser.

After testing the car on the dual carriage way and some heat soak condition as seen in my Blog dated 28/Jan/11, the car was returned to the owner.

Unfortunately, when the owner got off the motor way and drove into the city area, he started to hear the noise again.

    He also ...

Noticed that someone already tried to alter the position of the CAT by modifying the rubber mount.

This method was noticed on several other areas.

New exh. gaskets and self locking nuts.

  5. CAT and Front Down Pipe 01

While waiting for the liquid gasket to cure, worked on the CAT heatshield for the noise issue.

It would have been easier if I just trimmed the small portion of the horizontal metal bar at the aftermarket diffuser to widen the gap in order to prevent the CAT from scratching against it.

However, I was worried about the long term strength/durability of the metal bar so decided not to do so and went for the more time consuming option.
