can you imagine having your mate in the passenger seat controlling the throtte/gear change on the back wheels while you drive the front!

would be hilarious until you crash and die.

Remember from years ago reading a mag article where someone put an extra engine in his CRX. just googles it and found this which is along the same lines...

I also seem to recall in the days of Hakkinen & Coulthard, didnt they double up the engines in an A Class?

EDIT: here it is; http://uygarr.blogspot.com/2010/09/mercedess-small-monster-a190-twin-from.html

Is this road legal at all?

I think there is a reason they all end up as projects!

Didn't John Cooper do a twin-engined mini that ended very badly?

There have been lots of twin engined cars over the years. The first I remember seeing was a immaculately done Mk1 Golf with a 2.0 16V motor at each end.

You just have to synchronise the gear shifts, through a single lever on standard H pattern style 'boxes like this, and have the clutch and accelerator pedals operate both clutches and accelerators. The load placed on the engines by the transmission system/grip on the road will balance quite a lot of mismatched throttle etc. Get out of sync between the gearchanges and it all goes horribly wrong though :)

Kit cars like the twin ZX9 engined Tiger are a differant matter entirely :) (http://www.tigerracing.com/z100.php)

Cheers
