Hi all

Looking to buy a crash helmet for track day use and don't really know what i'm looking for so I thought I'd ask some of you track day veterans?
Went to a motorbike shop but the guy although very helpful said that the regulations for trackdays are different and that he'd sold a few helmets to people who then found that they were not allowed to use them when they got to the track! Also that the regulations are in the process of changing.
Does a bike helmet become very hot to wear in a car as you do not have the same flow of air through the helmet?
Is an open face helmet really the best option, as I would also like to get something that I could use if I was riding pillion without looking like my grandad on his stepthrough!!
Am looking to book for Donnington on the 14th if anybody knows their policies as I can't find any info on their website?

Thankyou in advance

Olly

they changed the approval marking system on helmets a couple of years ago and the 'wrong helmet type' problem kind of disappeared then I think, so basically anything on the shelf at your motorcyle dealer will do fine.

details on the Donington day on 14th are here
http://www.donington-park.co.uk/ontrack/

98dba limit applies as detailed here
http://www.donington-park.co.uk/trackattack/noise.asp

and if you are a Honda Revs (http://hondarevolutions.com/) Member it's £45 off - down to £150 for the day

if you are not a Honda Revs Member then join on or after 1st October (http://hondarevolutions.com/html/subscribe.html) at the reduced rate of £15 for the remainder of the club year (to 31st March) netting a saving of £30 for this day as well as the additional benefits of membership.

Olly,

For trackdays a standard motorcycle helmet will do but you may should make sure your buy one to the latest standard ie ECE 22-05 or British Standard 6658 categorised as Type A (blue label) or Type B (green label).

I think an open face helmet would be best if you're only going to do trackdays but either type is going to be hot, and both mess up your hair equally well if that's a concern.
Even if you don't ride a bike you can use a full face one for Karting etc.

If you think you may want to compete in proper Motor Sports Association (MSA) events in the near future you will need a fireproof one to one of the following standards.... BS6658 A/FR, SNELL SA2000, SNELL SA95, FIA8660-2004 or SFI Foundation 31.1(a) & 31.1(b).

Cheers

Mark
