My wheely difficult decision ...

So I'm about to add the OEM NSX-R tyres to my NSX but really don't want to run these all the time, particularly through the forecasted wet winter months.

I'm therefore thinking about a set of general road rims as this would allow me to keep the R rims/tyres for blats and trax.

So I've been looking around and have a shortlist. Here they are, with links to photos for the non OEM.

- Another set of OEM 17's but left standard silver - no photo as you all know what these look like

- Volk GTV with grey centres ( as per the Silverstone shown below) - 17's or 17/18 combo

Those that know me, know how I've built my NSX based on OEM design to this point. Do I stick to this principle or do I 'opt out' for the road rims, knowing that I have the ultimate OEM set-up waiting in the garage?

Hi Paul

Whichever wheel you go for it is best to see what tyre sizes are available. I have 17"/18" wheels on mine and looked at getting the Type R tyres when the Bridgestone SO3 were discontinued.

Told at the time that the REO55 & REO70 Type R tyres only came in 17/17 fitment so best to check first, that was from Detlef on my first visit, Maybe other sizes are available now.

Also am not sure if the tyres are "E" branded as legal for European road use, might effect your insurance etc.

Best to check with Detlef first.

I've been having this same debate since Tuesday. I was aware that the NSX was complicated wheels wise, but didn't comprehend quite how much! I've decided to stick to a 17/17 set up with 2002 OEM tyre sizes.

Work Emotion XT7s are top of my list as well so let me know and maybe we can get a deal/save on shipping.

I'm torn between Matt Silver (grey) and White. What do people think?

My other idea was S2000 wheels. The 2007 wheels offsets would mean 6mm closer at the front and 11mm closer at the rear. I'm assuming this would be create a caliper rubbing problem. Is there a satisfactory way around this? (Looks nice though)

As per post # 6,i vote the GT-C.with the colour of your car they would look great with the darker spoke and polished rim.

It's all personal choice but I think I would go for the Prodrive 05, as long as your brakes were looking good too ( painted calipers etc).

I would of kept the OEM wheels for road use, and mahoosive other wheels for track use, using track tyres, for the ultimate track setup.

How often are you really going to get hold of RE070's? I've used mine once on track, stored them, as on an Autumn road they are pretty lethal. Now I think they have gone hard, and don't really fancy using them at all anymore.

Hi Paul,

the other "grey Paul" owner, Crazymixedupkid, now has the Prodrive GC-07's on his car. I think they look great as they are a 17/18" combo retaining the OE style. I know you didn't want any new wheels thrown in to the mix but I really think you should see these wheels on his car. They look especially good in the anthracote-ish colour. You'd see exactly what they'd look like as his car s the same colour as yours(I know you'll know this).

And that's where the problem lies for me.I can't see the point of spending big money on a set of rims that look almost the same as the rims you have just taken off.

Thanx for all the responses and votes guys and its the OEM & Prodrives on 7 a piece with the XT7 with 5 votes.

Really pleasing as these are the top 3 for me although I am surprised that the Volks didn't get more votes ... I wonder if the Prime guys would vote the same. CLearly the top 3 here are good rims with low bling value which is encouraging as well.

A good shout ref the tyre choice available which is the next thing I must look at in detail. I'm hoping that there will be a wider choice running a 17/18 set-up. I will also need to choose carefully so as not to upset the tcs balance ( may well need your help here Kevin/SS).

I've seen CMUK's set up and do really like this Gary, but with only 2 Magnums around did want to keep them individual. Like Rob's suggestion these rims do have an OEM look and its here that I side with Ivor. If its not OEM then I want a fresh look.

Sudesh, those are th later 55's that Detlef has on offer, I've gone for the original R tyre, 070, and now available on the GTR.

I've not had a problem with the TCS on mine running 17/18 wheels. Only time ive seen the TCS fail light is at the "top end" speed runs but I should have turned it off anyway!

My track tyres which are 235/40/17 and 275/40/18 will engage TCS on hard acceleration. Just briefly, it's hardly noticable, but does happen each time.

Of course the TCS is not usually on, when those wheels are.

Would I be right to say that these sizes are to keep the balance f2r? Are these depedent upon wheel offset to allow them to fit, and do they give you any clearance issues, ie on full lock?

Sure is to keep the balance. The width difference f/r is the same as the OEM 17/17 sizes.

Rubbing issues? Loads!! This is not a road suitable setup. Also I have Comptech suspension clamps which reduces the lock, even on OEM sizes. On the track its fine, you don't use anwhere near full lock.

The wheel offsets are 40mm. The car looks really mean with the wheels on. It looks like one of those Astons in Le Mans or something. The tyre profiles are noticeable higher (due to the width) than OEM, but helps with compliance.

Compare the pics of 2007 Aug 21st Silverstone evening, and 2007 July 17 Silverstone evening. One event was on puny sized OEM, while the other on track tyres.

I have tried several different combinations of tyres on mine, it currently has 215/40/17 on the front, 275/35/18 on the back, almost my favourite set up. I've not had any rubbing issues with these and mine is running the type R suspension which drops it about an inch.

My spare set is 205/40/17 and 265/35/18. with the 205's on the front the car is a bit too "twitchy", very responsive steering but a bit tiring!

I would prefer to run the 265 on the back with the 215 on the front as my ideal set up, but due to having the 205's, i dont want to end up with a 205 / 275 set up when my tyres wear out.

These are Bridgestone S03, if they had carried on making them i would have 215/265 all the time!

Also mine has 39 offset

Ok, bit of curve ball this, but have the chance of getting a set of 17/18 Enkei's. They are currently chromed (dont tell Dave :)) and I would look to refurb to OEM silver, maybe with polished lip??

Couple of pics showing them on current car and then to give an idea of how might look on mine. I'm thinking this could work well with my other mods .... thoughts anyone?

Finally, after nearly 4 months of hassle with our USA looney, my spare rims have finally arrived thanx to an enormous amount of support and help from Matt!

I'm going to refinish them to a bright silver finish and I'm interested to know what the going rate for a wheel refurb is these days? I've seen that a few owners have been through the refurb route recently.

I went into Wicked Wheels in Crawley the other day and they quoted £55 per wheel + VAT.


They also told me they could turn them around in a day if booked in.

When I get mine refurbed, I will try Wicked Wheels as they are now a franchise around the country & are mobile too I think. Previously they were too far when they were on site only. Papa I think tried them to great effect? Since they are done to a high standard, £55 +vat is good since the average wheel refurber would charge bewteen £40-45 up here in the NW, but the quality may not be the same?
