View Full Version : NSX Running Costs

Hi All,

I have a NSX itch that needs a bloody good scratch.

Current plan was to start looking in the new year, but I may be tempted to jump earlier for the right car at the right price.

However, I want to make sure I have done my homework on running costs.

Bristol Honda are up the road and are NSX certified, so I would be using them.

I also expect to have a car with a reasonable mileage, say 60,000+.

Can any one give me a guide on running costs, covering Honda servicing and consumables such as tyres, discs and pads.

Thanks

Nick

You'll be pleased to know that everything is pretty much in line with the S2000, far fewer aftermarket parts are available though.
However our friends in the US help out with bringing prices down even for OEM parts.

Buy wisely and you should be fine.

mine seems as economical as my DC5 was. maybe its something to do with it dosent need banging round to the redline to be fast

but seriously for the pace its well good fuel if your steady. :)

I plan on the following (these are rough figures and there are others here who know far more than I):-

Fuel = Average 22mpg
Insurance = £500-1500 depending on individual.
Tyres=1 set per year anything from £300-£700 depending on choice.
Routine servicing = £300 for annual service (£800 in year 3 to include tappets, £1200 if it's cambelt and waterpump time)
Brakes = Pads in 10k miles, again, anything from £60-£250 per set. Not sure about disc life est. 20k for fronts.
Just in case fund = £1000 (doubt it will ever be needed, but as the name suggests)

Overall. Costs are consistent with any performance / mid range car IMO. Cheaper than 993/996 or M3, about the same as an S2k, 350Z or similar.

A 60K car will probably need a timing belt, water pump, valve clerances service. Clutch and Brakes might need doing too.

If those items are not done look to spend upwards of 3K to get them done.

If those are not done is a good number to think off when negotiating.

it all depends how useful you with spanners, normal services are not difficult, tappets not that complicated either.

I thought tappets were 72K?

Every 3 years according to Honda UK.

In addition to Ferrisbueller's comments it depends on what average mileage you do and if its a only or second car. If second car, then consumables will last alot longer. Rear tyres generally last 4000-6000 miles depending what you brand you get and how aggressive from the lights you are and fronts can last 2/3 times longer than the rears due to set up of the rears. In addition brake pads can be a little cheaper if not getting oems, as for disc brakes there plenty of aftermarket choice for the smaller 3.0 engine ones, but larger 3.2 is more expensive, so go to US supplier or Bazza here on VtecDirect. If you went to Honda for oems for 3.2, its £700 for fronts , but £100 for rears ! HTH

I think I spend about the same overall, as I did with my S2K's

More fun though:)

You know you want to!

Based on my car's receipts:

Clutch lasts in the order of 50-60k - £2k.
Cambelt service, every 6 yrs or 60k - £800. I think the cambelt interval might be longer for 3.2 cars.
Tyres: Back 7k at £270, front 14k at £250.
Alternate services at 6k miles, £200 then £3-400. Later cars (3.2) have 9k service interval.
Electric power steering unit 60k at £1k.
Brakes 50k at £800. Pads are cheap. Both cheaper and more expensive options exist for discs. If the NSX has a weak point it's brakes but there are plenty of upgrade possibilities if you are a track day person.
O2 sensors from 50k onwards, £400 each at Honda (2-4 depending on year of car) but much cheaper to buy parts from US.

If anything big goes wrong, ABS, TCS for example, something that I believe to be rare, very expensive unless you can find second hand parts. Climate control and Bose can fail but these can be repaired cheaply (very expensive to buy new bits though).

Panels - horribly expensive. This means NSXs can become Cat Ds for damage that average cars would survive.

The 72k service is almost £600 (valve clearances) and the 120k service (or at the 12 year point) is £1050 (Chiswick Honda quotes).

judging by the prices above, some of you guys ought to consider getting your cars service in the South-West.

You are probably right, but is not that many dealers that will install non OEM parts.

I've not had fitted any non-oem parts to mine, so I've not encountered that issue.

However, the last cambelt I had fitted cost me less than £400.00, the last small service £160.00 ( I didn't supply my own oil) and my last set of tyres cost £450.00.
Additionally, £2K is a lot of money for a clutch!

Really not bitching, just comparing like for like and enjoying the cheaper rates.

Clutch should be around 1700.00 this side of the Severn. :)

I guess it's one of the few expensive running costs we have. However, I hear that 360's and Gallardos do clutches every 10K if driven hard.

I'd be interested to know what the average life of an NSX clutch actually is. I think Matt's has done over 50K so far. the clutch on my last car was replaced at 46K.

I'm on 65k but I think the clutch was replaced at 18k along with the rest of the transmission.

What was wrong with the transmission?

Nothing, from the emails I have the transmission was replaced so Honda could see what 18000 miles of driving had done to the then new 6 speed box.

The prices I quoted were mostly from Chiswick Honda which I suspect might be the most expensive there is - London prices.

It sounds as if your ABS pump or Solenoids might be on the way. Take the car somewhere safe like an empty parking area and "exercise" the ABS.

BTW there are no tappets on an NSX!
