OK this is worthy of a new thread...check it:

RAC
3.2, worth28k, driveway, upto 8000mls a year including commuting, 3 points for speeding, wife on policy (previous non fault accident) yada yada

free breakdown cover
no extras taken and excess pushed to max (£1440)

£630

BEST bit - heard of Quidco? if not then get with it, they offer £70 cashback for RAC policies.

so £540 for the year... did I mention I'm 27?

insured wifes CTR as well - £370 after Quidco and that includes £30 extra for business useage (more than std commuting) That is £180 less than her renewal quote.

if your not bored by now then check this out! I told my current insurer about my wife's job changing from a financial business reviewer to a property developer.... premium up £160!? tried to change it to her being director of her own business (she is this as well) but they wouldn't have it. RAC don't even ask about occupations. How it can make that much difference I don't know... I work in insurance and would never price a poilcy that depended that heavily on occupation unless it was a Bomb disposal expert applying for life cover:laugh:

QUIDCO - dont miss out like i just did when I got sky installed, could have had £85 back but didn't think to look. I wont make the same mistake again!
Takes 5 mins to register and can save you loads... up to £120 back on house insurance with Barclays and they do a price promise. Lots of my friends swear by it and I have used it a few times sucessfully now.

nite nite;)

Luke, well done mate, just a some Qs please

Q. I assume amazing Basingstoke is a safe ish area?

Q. Your RAC quote was with a huge excess, did you get a quote for say £500 excess or below a £1000?

Q. Is your X over 10 years old?

Q. Only £370 for a CTR? Thats cheap considering its in the old 17-18 Insurance group? Not sure where it is in the newer 100 grouping?

Q. With the Quidco £540 quote, what is the excess & does it allow for some car mods?

Cheers James :)

...I must admit that I noticed after I posted that, it had raised my excess to £1450!

Comes to £499 for me with £720 excess.

Every time you get a quote, the final price page shows it with a higher excess than you originally selected....slightly misleading IMO.

So, it could be £414 if I ever get registered with Quidco....

the amount of excess usually doesn't bother me as I don't really intend to crash!! but at £1450, that's quite a bit excess to have to pay in the unfortunate event that a crash happens.

For increasing your excess £730 you save £85. You take your own risks but that effectively says that if you think you have less than a 1 in 8 (12.5%) chance of crashing (or more importantly claiming) in the next year then you should pick the higher excess.

If I claimed on my insuurance it would affect my quotes for the next 5 years and reduce my NCB. Doing the sums I would have to have a claim of more than 5k to make it worthwhile claiming in the long term.

I'll be careful!

James,

replies below:

Luke, well done mate, just a some Qs please

Q. I assume amazing Basingstoke is a safe ish area? I don't have the croime figures for my area but it's better than Moss side
Q. Your RAC quote was with a huge excess, did you get a quote for say £500 excess or below a £1000? Yes - play around with your own figures when getting quotes to see what suits you best

Q. Is your X over 10 years old? The clue's in the number plate... S5... and my sign off... and the fact it's a 3.2...

Q. Only £370 for a CTR? YES Thats cheap considering its in the old 17-18 Insurance group? YES Not sure where it is in the newer 100 grouping? Poor you

Q. With the Quidco £540 quote, what is the excess & does it allow for some car mods? read post again, Quidco is not an insurer!

Cheers James :)

It's that time of year again.

I have 3 quotes of circa £700 now from 3 smaller name insurers.

RAC and the usual suspects all want £1200 plus.

Dan, I'm with A-Plan myself. Their renewal quote is one of three I have at around the same price and they'll price match anyway. I'll spend a while getting quotes but I think they'll be getting my hard earned again.

Don't think I tried A-Plan as car has to be over 10 years old? Got a great quote through Peart insurers, apparently they insure footy players too! Don't know if thats good or bad!? HTH

I just about beat that this year; Swinton, unlimited mileage, £500 excess, 1 year ncd (7 years on company car). Premium = £380.

Just an observation: When you complete the forms on the online quotes ensure you enter the details of your car manually. A lot of them default to a Type R when you put in your reg #.

Also, they all have a tendency to bump the excess without telling you they've done so.
