Today, just finished one of the most challenging Gauge Cluster service.

I received the cluster in mid-September so took 3 months because of the damages caused by someone worked on it in the past.

For the first time (at least for me), found driver IC failure.

Not sure it was already there before someone serviced it or not but at the end, had to de-solder 16pin IC and installed gold plated IC socket in preparation for the replacement IC.

This was the first time I had to replace the main cross-coil driver IC in my life.

In order to analyse the signal, I had to place my own gauge cluster on the bench and disassemble it more than 20 times because my NSX is a daily driver.

When received this unit, the speedo always stayed at certain speed even when there was no VSS signal input.

And once applied VSS simulated signal, it only operated up to around 20 – 30mph and then suddenly drops back to 0mph.

No further operation until power reset.

As it’s vector force of two coils set at 90deg against each other, I knew it was something around the driver circuit.

Just couldn’t confirm the state of driver IC without comparing every single terminal status against my own gauge cluster.

Thank you to Heineken for spending sometime in advising me based on the spare gauge unit from another Honda model.

It was using different type of IC but close enough for me to determine that the IC was at fault.

Was hoping to get OEM Toshiba IC from another owner with spare dead gauge cluster but at the end, had to search for the aftermarket replacement.

Found one and finally arrived recently.

Since it's an aftermarket one, operated more than 70Hrs on the bench at various setting but mainly at max current consumption setup for the speedo and the tacho.

Checked for no abnormal temperature change or current consumption before finally happy to say I will keep this IC in place.

Speedo calibration took ages as one of the pot had to be set at max although Heineken told me that he also experienced the same in the past so something not new.

After spending so much time if not weeks, glad to finish the service just today.

Details and photo will be in the blog.
