Hi guys,

I am really pleased that we have opted to open this new builds forum as I have always found it both useful and satisfying having a thread dedicated to of our cars. Anyways on with the build!

So I have been after an NSX for years, i've worked my way through a fairly healthy catalogue of turbo charged Japanese cars and i've always had an eye on the top place car and for me that is the NSX. When I would (rarely) see one about I would get giddy with excitement! They really are such a spectacle on the road and I do feel lucky to be in a position to own one.

How did that happen? Well I bought a (rather expensive) ticket for a driving tour, a week around the alps with ex racing drivers and fellow lunatics. I bought a stock, black S2000 for the trip and my brother also brought along his heavily modified Nissan 200SX. We had an incredible adventure and met many amazing people, I somehow swapped my S2000 for an F360 Spider and a Murcielago and I can tell you that was an experience around some of the best roads this side of the globe Amazing.. anyway at the end of each day we would catch up in the bar and discuss the day. The theme that kept cropping up was how well the near to stock, larger engined NA cars did versus the smaller, turbo and supercharged cars. My friends and I have always opted for the turbo cars and tuned them for power and handling but it was a bit of an eye opener seeing my brother's fire breathing 200SX having it's ass handed to it every day by a stock Boxster!!

When we came home I was left feeling underwhelmed by the S2000, it was a great car and I vividly enjoyed being on tour with it but in my daily routine it just wasn't doing it for me. It didn't have any sense of occassion. So I got back to looking on pistonheads for Silvia S15's and other Japanese turbo charged cars and on a whim I spied C7NSX, for a fairly outrageous price compared to what I was looking at I might add. I started doing the sums and after two months of haggling and an expensive clutch repair C7NSX was mine! That was in July 2010 and I still cannot stop looking at it outside my window (right now..its distracting me from trying to write this!).

This is the day after I got it home

Onto the spec:

NA1 1991 Berlina Black @ 53,000 miles.

Tein Racing Springs
H&R Hubcentric Spacers (+ 20mm)
Porsche Carrera Wheels (F 18" 8j + 50, R 18" 10j +60)
Stock intake with custom cone filters inside
Wing Intake
PRIDE V2 Exhaust
Test Pipes
NA2 Manifolds
StopTech Big Brake Kit (328mm) with ST-10 Rear Calipers
Nardi Racing Wheel (330mm)
Momo Shifter
NRG Snap Off Steering Wheel Hub
Carbon fiber center panel
Kenwood stereo relocated to glovebox

Some of the modifications were already fitted such as the wheels and BBK, however many are my own personal touches. The car has many minor niggles which I am slowly working through, minor electrical issues, faulty passenger window, a faulty headlamp motor was replaced, a full water pump, timing belt, oil service and handbrake setup was needed after the harmonic balancer failed in spectacular fashion on the motorway (REPLACE YOURS!!!).

This is how it sits today, i've done some work on the paint and various minor things. The biggest visual change will come when I get my new wheels on.

My plans going forward include new wheels which I have now purchased, new aero parts including skirts, rear valance and NSX-R wing and hopefully a full paint job. I would very much like it in a dark, cadbury's purple colour and I have a very good bodyshop. I'd like to ditch the nasty foglights too. These plans are all going to be tempered with me saving up for a house deposit though.

I took the car on my first track day in April, here are a couple of shots from that. The car performed beautifully and I can't stress enough how much fun it is! Amazing. Just like the alps but a fraction of the cost. The car also attracted a lot of attention in the pits and always seemed to have a crowd gathered around it.. now I just need to learn how to drive it properly!

I took the car to a rolling road event hosted by the guys I went on tour with (PetrolHead Nirvana) at the Surrey Rolling Road.

http://www.180sx.co.uk/media/nsx/dyno_1.jpg

Here is my graph. The power was disappointing, I was hoping for over 300hp with the modifications I have put on. After some research it seems my fueling is off and I also failed to do an ECU reset since I have owned the car.. oops!

http://www.180sx.co.uk/media/nsx/nsx_dyno_1.jpg

My next steps are to investigate for ECU errors and possible change the 02 sensors although my bro reckons that won't change the power (he's starting a tuning business and has done tons of research on mapping etc along with mapping his own 200SX). After that I guess larger fuel injectors and a custom map, either by ROM chip or by aftermarket ECU. A never ending list cars eh..

So I fitted my new wheels this weekend, the arch liners need to go and I need to get an aggressively negative camberred alignment done but otherwise it's good to go. I am not a fan of darker wheels and I think I will have them powder coated gold in a few months :)

Hi Tokyo-Joe
New wheels looks great but I read that 18/19 wheels are not optimal for handling.
Have you checked out this on Prime regarding NA tuning:

Hey,

Yep that's fairly high on my list :)

I like the 18/19 look and am thinking of some smaller rims as track wheels with less aggressive offsets so I can squeeze some wider tyres in there. I guess these are my poser rims :)

Hey all, just a quick update on what i've been up to with the car :)

I have been experiencing rubbing tyres due to the alignment and the aggressive rear wheel offsets. To combat this I have removed the wheel arch liners and have booked the car in for a laser wheel alignment in a couple of weeks where I will get the car setup for race alignment with extra negative camber to help tuck the tyres. I can't wait :)

I ordered some clear side repeaters for an S2000 as i've heard they are a direct fit so i'll let you know on that. I have also booked into my bodyshop to have my 02+ OEM sideskirts painted and fitted, my front bumper and wings painted up to give a fresh front end. I am also going to lose the front H emblem.

I finished my Nardi steering wheel, NRG hub and NRG snap-off setup..
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/425392_10150926588913173_1195972431_n.jpg

I am organising a Welsh road trip in August so trying hard to get the car ready for that. I am looking for a replacement good condition roof lining and an 02+ rear valance both of which are rather hard to find (for less then $$$$)..

Would have thought the grey side repeaters would look nicer on your black car? White ones would stand out too much...unless that's the look you are going for?

Tokyo-Joe
07-07-2012, 04:56 PM
SS - I have been talking with DrMikey but i'm not 100% the lining is as clean as *I* want it, that's not knocking that item and they are super rare but mine is not too bad so I would like a perfect replacement but we shall see, i'm still discussing with him.

NSXGB - I quite like the sharp contrast with black paint so I am happy to go with white/clear indicators. This is probably the reason the wheel colour has not tickled my fancy! I am thinking of powder coating them gold or silver later on in the year (the wheels not the indicators!)..

Hi Scott,

I bought the NRG release hub and boss from science of speed. The cost was approximately $420 for the two parts and then I paid a further £40 for customs. The steering wheel I opted for I went to a company called caraudiosecurity and bought a momo steering wheel that was not too far different from the nsx-r, cost was around £160. Told my insurance also that this modification was done mainly for security to which they agreed :) it is best to tell them as there is no more airbag, so best to have things accurately written on the insurance :)

Cheers,

Andy

Thanks Tokyo Jo it looks really good. I did find the NRG quick release hubs on line and you can have them in orange which would look great with my IOP NSX. I think the original wheel dates the interior and so I would like to change it.

wow, your car looks fantastic in the black.
very nice colour for them, i have a few mazdas, an mx3 in black with black alloys and an rx8 in wining blue :)

black needs extra care to keep shiney, what do you use for polish? i use the autoglym products, there is one for dark colours, then
the damm cat comes and decides to say hello and walk all over your shiney bonnet, gggrrrrrr lol little paw prints everywhere.

if i was to buy an nsx i'd love one in black. they look awesome from the front :)

Tokyo-Joe
16-07-2012, 07:12 AM
Thanks Soddy.

Yes I have also gone for black sports cars over the years and am frustratingly familiar with the extra cleaning ballache haha. That being said when black paint is polished there is little like it. I also find black hides the sharpness of the NSX lines which it could be argued look a little dated, a bright, solid colour shows the lines more clearly.

I test fitted my £7 side repeaters and they fit fine, the bulb connector needs rewiring to the one supplied so I will do a step by step guide when I do mine. I have also been refurbing my leather seats, they look very used and with a few hours treating the leather they are looking great, this should tide me over until I fork out for some red aftermarket buckets.

I took the car for 4 wheel laser alignment this weekend, since I have removed the arch liners and now had a more race inspired suspension setup my new aggressive wheels clear the arches properly :)

My new NSXR Seibon spoiler turned up as well, it looks fantastic and after I had a real issue removing the current spoiler from the glue i'm hoping my bodyshop will have time to fit it and it should finish the exterior mods.

Hi Tokyo Jo,

I always wondered what happened to this car! My brother took it in p/x against a CSL must be 5 years ago. I looked it over for him and test drove it. Very nice motor, my bro promised me all the extras as it came with all stock parts but he sold it before swapping them over! Man I wanted those brakes!

Guy said he had to fit porky wheels to go over bbk, if you want to go back to smaller wheels I can swap out my 2004 brakes with ya ;-D

Looks much better now you've tidied it, good to see it in a loving home.

Hey Lankstarr,

Ah it's great to talk with a previous owner :) it really is a cracking car and I am working my way through the niggles bit by bit, by the time I'm done it is going to be perfect (for me).

Tokyo-Joe
25-07-2012, 06:59 AM
Oh and the brakes are amazing, stopping power is fantastic, it far excels any other car I've driven so far for braking power. I would absolutely recommend them. That said the independent handbrake is useless lol, too small to effective clamp those massive discs so I always park in gear!

Tokyo-Joe
29-07-2012, 09:14 AM
So this weekend I fitted my carbon nsxr spoiler from Seibon. Fit looks good and with the hot sun the spoiler glue just lifted off without needing to remove it - result!

http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/s720x720/391209_10150970286888173_1116962060_n.jpg

I love the look of the rear of the car now, it seems so much more aggressive in the metal.

The bodyshop has been delayed a week which means I should be able to fit and rewire my clear side repeaters. I have been painting the housing as it looked cheap with it's shiny silver plastic to a satin black.

Nice work, looks much better. Rims sweet as well... What size are they and do they give enough brake clearance?

Tokyo-Joe
30-07-2012, 08:28 PM

18" 8.5j +39 front
19" 9.5j +20 rear

Loads of clearance for the brakes :)

Lankstarr
30-07-2012, 09:21 PM
Nice combo, so big brakes and big wheels and l lowered I presume... How have you lowered it?

Where did you get wheels from and what are they?

I might be moving in which case I'll get a house with a flat driveway and look at options!

Lankstarr
30-07-2012, 09:23 PM
Maybe not lowered looking back at pics! Still looks good though, have you got spacers on there as well?

Tokyo-Joe
30-07-2012, 09:29 PM
The car sits on TEIN springs on OEM shocks. The combination is fantastic, supple ride with firmness when you push on. I can attest to it's on track handling credentials.

I would like coilovers to lower the ride height to a ground scraping level however I am really enjoying being able to glide over speed bumps with the mildly lowered ride height it currently sports.

The wheels are from Driftworks. Strong, light, aggressive offsets and reasonably priced :)

Tokyo-Joe
31-07-2012, 07:04 AM
All wheel at back and I am running a 5mm up front to give additional clearance for the calipers.

Lankstarr

5mm spacer required on 18's for brake clearance... Dem some big calipers!

So a little update before I take it across North Wales for our driving tour on Friday..

I picked it up from the bodyshop today, I had fitted a set of genuine NA2 sideskirts and door extensions (thanks Dirk!), my front wings were repainted after a tyre scrubbing incident at Bedford Autodrome and I had the front bumper repainted. I'll need to take it back in to have the bumper finished as there were some complications but this is as it stands today:

We had a great time in Wales, the EVO triangle is a formiddable circuit and demands respect..

http://sphotos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/538946_10151067153893173_1967055097_n.jpg

The NSX drove great, fantastic handling even on 18/19 combo, very controllable around the bumpy parts of the circuit and very little skitter (if that is the correct term?), it felt safe and planted. Power wise it did feel a touch lacking compared to the MR2 turbos in our group putting out well over 300hp but alas that is the curse of the Honda!

http://sphotos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/380436_351735608235108_417038672_n.jpg

It easily sounded the best of the cars we took, the exhaust screaming around the Welsh hills. Very cool.

I brought it home (800 miles trip) and had the front bumper repainted:

I hope to repaint the wheels in silver or gold as my next project. Unfortunately my passenger window has given up the ghost so after reviewing how to refit them I decided to put it through NW for the fix. I think the quote is around £550 drive in, drive out after the part is in stock.

I'm not too sure on the window, it's been dodgy since the day I picked the car up. Slower and slower to close. Then intermittent button response. I've had it closed all summer then last weekend a friend opened it a slit by accident and it won't go back up. We can't force it either. If so did they comment on what was wrong it? Good chance it could be repaired, if not you could have got one from a breaker for much less.

I picked up a replacement 1999 roof lining from DrMikey, the newer roof lining is one piece rather then three separate pieces (like my 1991 JDM headlining) and it in fantastic condition, no clips broken :)

As the days have been darker in December I have been running my NSX several times a week and have really noticed the frankly terrible headlight performance. The beams seem bright but nowhere near high enough. The popups are in the correct up position when the lights are on. I have bought some much brighter bulbs including the sidelights so I will fit those in January and hopefully they will help though it seems like there must be a headlight alignment issue to produce such ****e night time visibility.

I have my MOT in January so fingers crossed that won't be painful (it flew through the last MOT with no minors) and if NW quote well I might employ them to fit the above.

Maybe stating the obvious but have you checked the height adjuster for the headlights in the centre console? I presume JDM models have these?

The only headlight button I know of is the manual up for cleaning?

do you have the button on the bottom right of the console?

Hmm my console is bare apart from climate controls, it's an aftermarket piece.

[Edit2: Just realised, this was your 'Build' thread so please feel free to merge, erase, etc this post as you own this thread. Kaz]

Unfortunately or fortunately, there is no height adjuster switch in the centre console on JDM.
[Edit: There is no requirement to have headlight washer or height adjuster on MOT rule in Japan.]

It seems that you already bought some sort of upgraded replacement bulb but for frequent night driving, you may want to consider retro fitting the HID kit.
There were lots of discussions on many car forums regarding the vehicle equipped with HID dipped beam including the aftermarket conversion kit considering the new MOT rule introduced from the beginning of 2012.
It is NOT a ‘must’ requirement to have headlight washer or height adjuster for NSX with factory or aftermarket fitted HID dipped beam.

Therefore, you won’t fail MOT just because of retro fitting the HID kit on JDM NSX without headlight washer or adjuster.
In fact, it’s the other way round.
If you have headlight washer and height adjuster with HID dipped beam, both (washer and adjuster) MUST operate properly.

There are two mechanical adjusters on each head light unit for the beam alignment.

Example here;
http://www.nsxcb.co.uk/showthread.php?6286-NSX-Health-Check-Service&p=76766#post76766

If they were never replaced in the past, they are probably already corroded and not possible to adjust the alignment any way.
And if they are already corroded, you don’t want to touch them without having access to the spare parts because you may introduce further issues (rattling head light unit).
It can be fixed but involves removal of head light unit so to save your time, best to have the spare parts before doing so.

If you need just a minor adjustment, don’t touch these adjusters but instead, loosen the four fixing bolts that are holding the entire head light unit to the frame and tighten them when the adjustment is done.

If getting the new adjuster parts, please make sure to keep the package and receipt.
There was some batch problem with this adjuster parts over a certain period and one time, my friend ordered nearly 100 of them and had to return all of them because they were all faulty.
Not sure whether the faulty batches were all recovered or not including the ones went outside Japan.

Indeed! The things I would do for a genuine rear valance though..

If you want a genuine 1991 rear valance in black, I have one in my Garage.

Have a load of other bits i'll need to get rid of sometime, will have to have a sort out when home.

Hi Kaz,

This info must only apply to UK then, as here in Northern Ireland [part of the UK] it wouldn't be correct and from talking to MOT head office they also confirmed to me that; If you have HID lights but "Do Not" have headlight wash, you car "Will" fail mot, I have actually seen this happen at the MOT center to a guy who had a DC5 integra with factory fitted hids, and as you will know, they don't come with headlight wash.

I even removed the HID kit from my car and Andrews as we were told the cars will fail because we don't have Headlight wash.

Our MOT is a bit more strict than the UK and we can't just drive to any garage for an MOT, we have government run dedicated MOT stations.

lol, Id rather have no HID's, than add headlight wash to be able to have them legally here.

What other bits do you need Nigel? I though you had it all by now?

Hi all, I have done a few more modifications to the car so will document those here.

I had my new OSRAM Nightbreaker headlight and sidelights bulb installed, I have yet to try these at night but I am looking forward to it. Fingers crossed they aid the car's poor night vision.

I finally got my hands on a clean headlining from a later model 1999 UK car. This makes a huge difference from the shoddy 1991 JDM headlining with it's suede detachable panels (my drivers side panel had detached permanently, leaving a hole in the roof..).

The car also passed another MOT with flying colours, no work needed. That's two years in a row at the main dealers and still no problems at MOT, I am very pleased!

Not much of an update but I did have an enjoyable experience with the car this weekend. I was driving back to my parents house after a meeting at my brothers unit (local car club) when myself and my brothers convoy was joined by a lovely black GTR. We had a little play on the way back and to my surprise he followed us to my folks. I was a little concerned but he pulled alongside and asked if he could look over my car as he had never seen one in the metal.

We had a really good chat and had a poke around each others cars and to be fair he was spellbound by the NSX. He had only had his GTR one day from past Fcar ownership so must have considered an NSX at some point.

Anyway it was a cool experience and it reaffirmed my love for sports cars and sport car culture that machines can bring so many different people with different experiences and backgrounds together. Very cool.

I finished the install of my NSX-R shift boot today, my carbon center console does not have any brackets for the hardware to mount so I had to fabricate some.

I've just purchased a titanium gear shift from an Integra Type R DC2 (same shape as the skunk in your picture)
I'm wanting to create the same look as yours with the NSX-R mesh etc, did you make any modifications for the 'snug' fit?

Tokyo-Joe

What you need to do is install the base plate as normal but measure where the installed shift nob sits and using a strong cable tie, tie up the top of the mesh boot to that level :)

Back on track at Bedford Autodrome, we enjoyed a superb evening session and the car performed faultlessly.

Thanks mate, I feel good feel fitment makes or breaks the look of a car, although as this is a sports car that I use on track it was a struggle balancing looks vs handling performance on the limit :) Diving into corners hard and rubbing tyres isn't fun so I have spent a lot of time tweaking the wheel offsets and alignment settings on the car to prevent this.

Here is another:

I went with some friends to Brands Hatch, I was not allowed on due to excess exhaust noise though :(

I have been saving for the past two years for my first house, I am now nearly completed with that purchase and am keenly looking forward to spending out on making my NSX the way I always envisioned it next year. I hope to be looking at wheels, coilovers, custom seats, paintwork, splitter, rear valance and audio equipment. Roll on 2014!
